Niecephew's First Knitted Gift

What do you mean it's not a cat mat?
(click for bigger version)

Pattern: Curlicue Coverlet from Oat Couture
Yarn: Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece (80% cotton, 20% wool) in Oriental Jade, 6 skeins
Needles: US size 5
Modifications: provisional cast-on, grafted seam
Cats: Scout and Elly, getting along for once.
Catless photo: here
Comments: I was a little worried about whether the blanket would be flat when I got ready to take this pre-blocking photo. I needed to tug and smooth quite a bit to get it to be flat-ish. But when I got the whole thing wet and put it on the bed to block, it wanted to be flat. No tugging required. All I had to do was pull it out to shape.

I love the shape and the curvy lines of this blanket and I'm very happy with the way it turned out. Hopefully, Niecephew will get a lot of good use from this. However, I think I liked the Pinwheel Afghan better than Curlicue. I liked the lace edge better, I like the reversibility better, and I liked the lack of double-sized short rows better.

I'm not sure how quickly I'll be getting this shipped off to my brother and SIL. Niecephew is not due to make an appearance until the end of May. (However, I'm encouraging SIL to wait until the first week in June so that the baby can have the same birthday as my brother or me. My birthday is also their anniversary. Wouldn't it be great to have three super events to celebrate in one day?) I intend to send a sweater for Eva (Niecephew's older sister) along with the blanket, but right now that sweater looks like several balls of yarn in a plastic bag. I wonder when it will magically transform into a sweater?

I love it. Absolutely love it. Love the color, too. Niecephew will be so cozy and happy with this blanket for years and years!

I'm sure that SIL will be just thrilled to try to oblige with your request. What 40-week pregnant woman wouldn't want to spend an additional week carrying around a full-term baby in the nearly summer heat?

I love curlicue, and those knitted cats you made almost look real! Seriously, I think that's a very cool blanket and I hope your niecephew is extremely intellectually advanced and can fully appreciate the complexity of its construction.

Good luck bewitching your knitting needles into knitting Eva's sweater for you!

I love it! I have to make it now! Why do you keep posting finished things that I have to make? Why? :)

The blanket is just beautiful, and the bookend cats are perfect models! I've put this pattern on my 'Someday' list.

What an interesting design. It will be much loved.

I hope you and Monkee can plan a trip to my neck of the woods soon.

Awesome job! Good to know that it isn't "insanely difficult" nor unable to lay flat. Sometimes just going with it to its conclusion proves a pattern's worth.

Gorgeous blanket, nice job!

You rock! Very very good job!
The picture in the pattern seemed to show the afghan in a more beautiful way ... seeing it lay flat, I agree with you ... the Pinwheel afghan is the more beautiful one. But still, again, you rock!
How about you start casting on now, then I think the yarns would become a sweater very quicly?
Your cats rock too!

Looks good to me!

I like Rachel's idea of bewitching the needles. When you find the charm, let us all know, 'kay?

I love that picture: your cats just sitting there, posing ever so pretty, on the blanket they KNOW you made just for them.

It's a wonderful blanket, too. I'm sure parents and baby alike will be happy use it and use it and use it.

Hello, next blog.

My name is Marie and I just happen to live in Pearland, too.

Imagine my surprise when you came up as "next blog".

Of all the jillions of people all over the world who use blogspot...well it just boggles my mind.

Cute cats!!

Stunning blanket. I also love the color you used. Pastel baby blankets get quite boring!

Beautiful job! How was the CF to knit with? Love that you didn't use pastel colors too! Glad it blocked well for you!

Holy moly! That is just awesome. I don't know if I'd be able to part with it.

Great job (as usual)!

This is a beautiful knit.

I'm so glad you went for it even though there have been problems documented elsewhere. I was thrilled with my finished Curlicue and I'm glad you like yours too.

wow that is so neat!

the curlique looks wonderful! i've seen some less successful versions of this blanket on some other blogs. it makes me wonder if it was their yarn choice, or just giving up because it wouldn't be flat until it was soaked? cotton fleece is very nice yarn too --- great value, baby friendly, and pretty!
